The smiles are back on iron ore workers as mines in Bellary have resumed operations.

After more than one and a half year, mining operations is slowly starting in the district. Though permission has been given to three companies in Bellary- B Kumar Goud Mining Company (BKG), Nadeem Minerals and Tiffin Barryates- only BKG has resumed operations from October 24.

Permission was given only after the mining companies undertook reclamation and rehabilitation (R&R) measures laid down by the Supreme court, mining of iron ore was prohibited by the apex court following allegations of large scale illegal mining.

Deputy commissioner of Bellary district Aditya Amlan Biswas told TOI that permission has been given after the R&R plan undertaken by the companies was more than 80%. "BKG has resumed operations while others are yet to do. Though they can mine, they are not allowed to transport the ore according to conditions laid by the apex court. Ore can be transported only after e-auction," he said.

The court constituted Central Empowered Committee (CEC), based on the illegality of the mining operations by the companies, had categorized firms as Category A, B and C. The mines in which there was least or no irregularities in was categorized as 'A' and those with maximum illegalities as 'C' category.

P Srinivas Rao, head of operations, BKG Mines told TOI that his company falls in A category and has satisfied all the condition laid down by the SC. "We started our production from October last week. Several officials monitoring committee including U V Singh had visited our site and were satisfied with the conditions. We have been given permission to mine 6.4 lakh tonnes of iron ore a year ore," he said.

He said there were more than 200 employees in the company in all category and are happy that operations have resumed. "Soon work will start in other companies and thousands of workers will have jobs in their hands," Rao added.

The forest bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice S H Kapadia banned mining activity across the state in July-August 2011, following the multi-crore mining scam. The bench partially lifted the ban April 20, 2012 in three districts of Bellary, Chitradurga and Tumkur in the state with stiff conditions. The Dehradun-based Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) prepared the R&R programme on the apex court directive for mining firms in category.

A three-judge forest bench headed by Justice Aftab Alam in September lifted ban on iron ore mining operations in the state by companies which had not flouted lease conditions. It accepted the report of CEC which had said that Category 'A' leases which consist of 21 operational and 24 non-operational leases be allowed to carry on their business as they have not violated any rules. The Karnataka Iron and Steel Manufacturing Association had sought immediate steps for opening of those iron ore mines in which the apex court appointed expert panel had found minimum irregularities.
