Chinese firm Afrochine Smelting said Thursday it will soon construct two chrome smelters with capacity to produce at least 40,000 tonnes of ferrochrome per annum.

Afrochine said in a statement the smelters would be set up in Selous located a few kilometres outside Harare, Zimbabwe's New Ziana news agency reported.

"Afrochine Smelting P/L plans to construct two 12, 5 MVA smelters with a capacity to produce 40,000 metric tonnes of ferrochrome per year as the first phase of the project," the statement read.

"Total investment in the first phase is expected to be in the region of US$2 million."

Once it takes off, the project is expected to consume 100,000 metric tonnes of chrome ore and 24,000 metric tonnes of coke per year.

The Zimbabwe government banned the export of chrome ore in April last year in a move aimed at promoting value addition of minerals.

Since the ban was imposed, many small scale miners have folded operations arguing that they did not have the financial capacity to set up smelting plants.

At present, the country has one operational chrome smelter Zimasco while the other ferrochrome miner, Zim Alloys has stopped mining operations.

Concentrated mainly along the Great Dyke, Zimbabwe's chrome deposits are the second largest in the world after South Africa.

The country produced at least 600,000 tonnes of chrome ore in 2010.
