China's coke industry is confronting shrinking demand and hiking raw material prices, and the demand is estimated to sit at 290 million tons in 2009, according to Huang Jingan, chairman of the China Coking Industry Association.

China's coke output totalled 327 million tons in 2008, down 2.54 percent year on year, the first retreat since 1999.      The decrease has continued into 2009, as the output in the first two months went down 6.3 percent, and that in March is predicted to decline by 7-8 percent.

The export volume of coke in the first quarter of this year dropped by 95 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, the production capacity of large and midsize coke ovens which are under construction or planned to be established in 2009-2010 amounts to 50 million tons.

Huang calls for risk prevention for the establishment of new coke ovens. In 2008, new coke ovens with a combined production capacity of 30 million tons were put into production, while others with production capacity of seven million tons were completed but suspended for operation.
