Print[Ferro-Alloys.com] It is reported that India is investigating Chinese imports of some types of stainless steel and may restrict the trade if domestic steelmakers have suffered from it.
The probe came from complaint of Jindal Stainless, after it found the imported 300 series of hot-rolled flat products from China occupies from 10 % to 50 % in the last three years.
In a statement from India, it showed imports from China boomed to 36,183 tons in the fiscal year 2011/12, from 5,364 tons in a year earlier.
Although India’s own production grew to 181,512 tons from 138,139 tons during the period, but the actual sales were much lower, totaling 72, 831 tons in fiscal year 2011/2012.
Per WTO’s regulation, India made its notification on July 4th and will decide to impose duties or not within 8 months.
If India really do so, it is very possible for China to challenge against this measure at the state of WTO, although the two countries have never fought a trade dispute at WTO since China joined the organization in 2001.
