The Tokyo-based company, created through a merger of the nation's biggest and third-biggest steel makers on Oct. 1 last year, said its current president Hiroshi Tomoto will become vice chairman. Chairman Shoji Muneoka will remain in his post.
 
The announcement comes as bright signs are appearing for the Japanese steel industry, which is benefiting from a weaker yen that is helping exporters such as auto makers. Prices of steel products have also starting rising after softening for a couple of years.
