According to data released last month by the U.S. Energy Information Agency (EIA), the renewable energy generation in the United States may consume more energy than coal by 2020.
Coal transport in the U.S. fell nearly a quarter last year, while the share of renewable energy was growing, according to the American Railway Association (AAR) data.
According to the monthly energy report released by EIA on December 23, the energy consumption of renewable energy in the U.S. in the first nine months of 2020 is 8.73 trillion British thermal units (Btu). Renewable energy includes hydro power, geothermal, solar, wind and biomass.
By contrast, in the same period of time, U.S. coal energy consumption was 6.85 trillion British thermal units (Btu).
In fact, energy consumption from renewable energy in the United States has exceeded coal in 2019, although the gap between the two is small and close to flat. In 2019, renewable energy consumption in the United States was 11.332 trillion British thermal units, while coal consumption was 11.326 trillion British thermal units.
EIA said in a December 31 energy today report:“In 2019, America's annual renewable energy consumption exceeded coal consumption for the first time since 1885.”
EIA continue to say:“ This result mainly reflects the continued decline in coal use for power generation over the past 10 years and the growth of renewable energy, mainly from wind and solar energy. Compared with 2018, U.S. coal consumption fell by nearly 15%, and the total cost of renewable energy increased by 1%.”
